In this newsletter: Black Friday deals, a women-empowering hotel, and holiday vibes
If you’re wondering why this newsletter, which usually appears in your inbox every Friday morning, is arriving in the evening, the answer is Thanksgiving. The day after Thanksgiving finds me floating away on a cloud of leftover stuffing while lounging around in pajamas. Today is a day for old holiday movies, harboring zero guilt for having Christmas cookies and leftover mashed potatoes for breakfast, and, of course, Black Friday deals. It’s that wonderful time of year when we collectively wonder how so many stores have our email addresses. I can’t recall signing up for Home Depot’s newsletters, but Wine.com? Now, that’s a Black Friday deal I’ll be using. To add to the chorus of Black Friday deals hitting your inboxes, Unearth Women is offering 20% off its entire store. Visit our store and use the code BLACKFRIDAY20 at checkout. The sales expires on December 1st!
Don’t forget! Whether you’re a new or existing paid newsletter subscriber, you’ll get a FREE copy of our feminist city guidebook to NYC!
A hotel made to celebrate women
This hotel-meets-art gallery is all about empowering women
Hotel Zena, which opened in Washington D.C. back in October, is a hotel-meets-art gallery where every architectural line, material, and art installation was thoughtfully designed and curated to send a message of female empowerment. All the original pieces are painted, photographed, sculpted, and stitched by feminists of both genders with powerful stories to share. The art displayed throughout the hotel not only celebrates women, it also honors the people who worked together to achieve fundamental civil rights. The "Portrait Gallery" in Hotel Zena's lobby features the stories of female warriors, such as the late Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Shirley Anita Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress. How cool is that?
Women to Watch
Four women from Antigua & Barbuda became the 1st all-Black team to row across an ocean
In early 2019, four women from Antigua & Barbuda became the first all-female, all-Black team to row across an ocean. Kevinia Francis, Samara Emmanuel, Christal Clashing and Elvira Bell spent 47 days, 8 hours and 25 minutes rowing 3,000 nautical miles to make history in last year’s Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge while raising funds for the charity, Cottage of Hope. From the challenges of crossing an ocean to traveling what was once the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade route, Unearth Women had the privilege of speaking with this record-breaking team.
Getting in the holiday spirit this week
Tis’ the season for pet sweaters, made-for-tv holiday movies, and hot cocoa
Watch The Happiest Season on Hulu. It is the LGBTQ+ empowering, cheesy holiday movie that we need this year. Speaking of cheesy holiday movies, even though you know it’ll be terrible, watch the sequel to Princess Switch on Netflix. It inexplicably has actress Vanessa Hudgens playing not one, not two, but three versions of herself. LOL. Decide to skip the mess of having a live Christmas tree this year (how am I still cleaning up pine needles from two Christmases ago?) and make the switch to Balsam Hill. Buy your pets holiday sweaters. My dog (pictured below) looked at me with eyes that asked, “why are you making me do this?” Meanwhile, my cat—who I attempted to stuff into a Christmas tree sweater—got his revenge by slowly pulling my hair out at 3 AM.
Pour yourself a cup of hot cocoa from this female-founded brand, Cocoa Santé, and top it with one of these gourmet marshmallows. Light this Charles Dickens Christmas candle, which smells exactly like the holidays, and—if you live in a small city apartment like me—pretend you have a real fireplace by playing this Youtube video.
Love Chico in his holiday sweater
I like the sound of that hotel 💛❤
