In this newsletter: a BIG announcement, the woman behind the Wanderful travel community, and an ode to getting cozy
Let me take a deep breath because I’m positively giddy with excitement over this announcement. Today Unearth Women is introducing its very first printed feminist city guide. Cue the confetti and fireworks.
In case you missed it, in last week’s newsletter I was waxing poetic about our digital feminist city guides, which we are working on revamping and republishing this and next month. Our feminist city guides point travelers in the direction of women-owned businesses and female-supporting initiatives in destinations around the globe. Since our publication began, it has been a dream of ours to offer printed feminist city guides for our readers to take on their future travels.
Well, today that dream becomes a reality.
In this softcover printed feminist city guide, we turn our attention to New York City! We'll show you our favorite women-owned hotels, restaurants, and shops across the city. From the women who have historically shaped NYC to the women-owned businesses we know and love, this guide shows you NYC in a way most guidebooks do not: through a feminist lens.
Expect to learn about hotels that have a surprising women’s history twist, discover bakeries founded by Latinx women, and find a guide to shops that support female entrepreneurs.
Current and new subscribers will receive this guidebook FREE with their paid newsletter subscription. If you’re not a paid subscriber, click the button below to subscribe or visit our online store to purchase your print or digital copy!
Woman to Watch: Beth Santos
Meet the woman behind one of the largest travel communities for women
While riding her motorcycle through the streets of São Tomé and Príncipe—an island nation off the coast of Africa—Beth Santos had a spark of inspiration to create a women’s travel community. With a background in international development and community building, Santos would go on to be the Founder and CEO of Wanderful, a global lifestyle brand now 40,000+ members strong.
What started as a blog in 2009, has since grown into a multi-faceted travel company with an international conference, home-sharing network, mobile app, group trips, community chapters in over 45 cities, and enriched content. In this interview with Beth Santos, we learn more about the inception of Wanderful, the challenges she faced in building her own travel empire, and what her best advice is to aspiring female entrepreneurs.
Take it away, Chef Alison Roman
Here’s what happens when you eat too much apple pie
This week I turned 33, which means one thing: apple pie. I am one of those rare birds that don’t like cake and, instead, always prefer apple pie on my birthday. To compensate for 2020, the rainy weather, and turning another year older — I went all in on apple pie this year. Like, all in. I picked up an apple pie from a bakery upstate, I ate apple pie from Magnolia Bakery in the city, I even had apple pie and champagne for dinner. Now (unsurprisingly) I have a stomach ache that brings up more bile than when I listen to Trump say he won re-election. *eye roll*
All of this is to say I won’t be sharing a recipe in this week’s newsletter (unless that recipe is for homemade Pepto Bismol). In case you missed them, you’ll find recipes for Paris-inspired apple tarts, Cajun shrimp bakes, and more in my past newsletters. If you’re looking for something new and FANTASTIC, the video above is an Alison Roman recipe I’ve cooked about 50 times now. Best of all? It doesn’t call for any apples.
Things to do this week
Achieving ultimate cozy status, fake plants, and the perfect dog Instagram
Decide you are ready for the holidays right now and begin slowly transforming your home into a winter wonderland. Order this Wine Cabin candle from Kelly + Jones and, just for good measure, this Mark Twain themed candle from Paddywax. Relish in the fact that your apartment smells like something other than your dog’s butt. Take your coziness to the next level and order this city bonfire and s’mores kit before deciding an indoor bonfire + multiple candles is way too much of a fire hazard. Watch as your boyfriend refreshes the Best Buy website 100 times in an attempt to purchase a new Playstation 5. Decide to get creative with your own holiday shopping by buying gifts exclusively from this woman-owned virtual pop-up (no refreshing of browsers needed).
Admire the irony that the money tree you bought this summer has literally dried up. LOL. Look around and realize that every single one of the over-priced plants you purchased this summer has died. Blame the over-active radiator in your apartment of which you have zero control over (thanks, NYC landlords) and order fake plants from The Sill instead. Take a break from the news and instead find joy in this dog account illustrated by my Astoria neighbor.
