I have a BIG announcement!
Last year, Unearth Women was getting ready to print its 4th issue. Our team had spent months writing, editing, designing, photographing, planning, and bringing to life an issue that would be dedicated to inclusivity. With the finalized PDF ready to send to the printers, everything fell apart. A perfect storm of high production costs, budget constraints, and our distributor going out of business resulted in us never printing our 4th issue.
This broke my heart, to say the least. I felt unsettled, it felt unfinished, it all felt wrong. Sure, issue 04 was offered for digital download but, as many of you have messaged me to say, there is a certain magic to holding the magazine in your hands. The world moved on, days melted into months, but it never sat well with me that this issue hadn’t been printed. The whole point of this issue was to elevate the stories of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ travelers who are rarely seen in travel magazines. The incredible people who gave their voices, talents, and stories to these pages expected and deserved to have their day in print and now…..they do. After months of looking for an alternative printing option I can finally say…
Our 4th issue is printed!!!!
It is currently laying on my coffee table, which makes me deliriously happy. Featuring Evita Robinson of Audacity Fest and Nomadness Travel Tribe on the cover, this issue was guest edited by Annette Richmond of Fat Girls Traveling, and shares stories that are just as relevant today as they were when first written.
Become a paid newsletter subscriber to get our 4th issue AND our feminist city guidebook to NYC. This month, 20% of all new subscriptions will be donated to the non-profit, Women for Women International. Not ready to subscribe? Order this issue from our online store.
I want to hear from you
So, how am I doing?
Once upon a time, Unearth Women had a different newsletter called The Weekly (not my most creative work) and, to be honest, it felt super dry. Despite my best intentions, the newsletter would read like a slapped together update of stories we had recently published. This was largely because it was a slapped together update of stories we had recently published, but it was also because I didn’t inject my personality into the words I wrote. Which is, of course to say, I wasn’t as transparent about how often I cook, drink wine, and wear sweatpants.
With this new newsletter, I want it to feel real and conversational. Hell, I want it to feel like you’re plopped down on the couch next to me (also wearing sweatpants, obviously) gushing over shared recipes and cool stories. It’s important to me that this weekly email is as enjoyable for you to read as it is for me to write. To make sure this newsletter doesn’t become a dreaded inbox clogger, I want to hear from all of you! If you have two minutes (yes, just two), please take the time to answer these six questions about what you like, don’t like, and wish to see more of from this newsletter.
Things to do this week
A disclaimer, Taylor Swift, and holiday smugness
As a cynical New Yorker, when people recommend products to me I am always wondering what’s in it for them. So, when I received a message from someone asking me whether I was getting commission off the products I recommend in this newsletter, I couldn’t blame them for wondering. Alas, I am not a secret ambassador for loungewear and wine (although, truly, I should be). None of the products I share here are affiliate links or sponsored. Rather, they are things I’ve recently discovered, fell in love with, or use daily — such as these Gilli sweatpants, which have been my uniform this pandemic.
While I have been watching Top Chef re-runs, the brilliant Taylor Swift has been churning out song after song. Last night, just as Tom Colicchio wrinkled his nose at yet another okra, Swift surprise released a new album called Evermore. This album (a companion to her other surprise record this year, Folklore) is essentially the emotions of the pandemic distilled into a soundtrack. This weekend you can find me wearing THE cardigan (yes, I’m that much of a fan) and listening to this album on repeat. As I do that, I’ll be shopping from Unearth Women’s holiday gift guide (shameless plug) as I’m determined to be more conscious in my gift-giving this year. This means my family can expect to receive presents with a side of holiday smugness. “No, Daddy, it’s not just olive oil — it’s a female-founded, organic olive oil brand from California. Jeez.”
